While I have bred canaries for most of my life, it was not till last year that I started to breed the American Singer Canary. Canaries have always been a singing bird for me and that is what drew my interest in the American Singer. I could have taken up the breeding of another variety of song canary, but in Southern Ontario, Canada the American Singer is the song canary with the strongest following.
My American Singers in the flight for the summer.
I will start to remove the young males from this flight as soon as they start to sing. This will start their training for the fall competitions.
Another closup of the birds in the flight.
My modest four cage breeding area with small flight cage below and a bank of four smaller cages on each side, which are used to train the male canaries to sing.
A good hen sitting tightly on her nest of eggs. This is on of the satisfactions one receives from keeping birds.
Young stock of this year separated for closer scrutiny.
These are the same birds from a different angle.
A close-up of one of the boys.

Comment by GUEST on 2009-12-18 14:11:43 Hi JOHN: Many older breeders in our fancy claim that The GREEN AS bird has an inherent gene for the wildness of song and therefore, wins more acclaims at the shows.Do you attest to this observation also? You win a lot so you may know this answer. Best to you. SC
